Pro Heinävesi's purpose is to resist the graphite mines that Beowulf Mining's subsidiary (Fennoscandian Resources) is planning to Heinävesi, Leppävirta and Tuusniemi, Eastern Finland. Our aim is to reserve clean nature and fresh water habitats for future generations.
The mine's possible environmental impacts threaten not only the nature reservers nearby but also the tourism industry in Heinävesi and possibly even in the Lakeland area. The project has been opposed by local residents, by politicians including MEP Petri Sarvamaa and also by the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation as the site is close to the Saimaa nature reserve. Read an article written in English about the subject. Lintula Holy Trinity Convent has expressed fears the project will endanger the herb cultivation on which it depends for income. Beowulf Mining has been ranked as one of the worst oil, gas, and mining companies on indigenous rights and resource extraction in the Arctic.
